Though it may be drizzling out—this is Portland, Oregon, after all—you’ll almost always find the door at MKID wide open. Shop owner and interior designer Amanda Montgomery Klash insists on it. "I always like to have good music playing, a nice scent in the air, and the door open if the weather permits," says Amanda. "The shop really has a wonderful ambience."

Located in the trendy West End district of Portland, MKID is filled with items hand-selected by Amanda (seated above; standing next to Amanda is MKID designer Emma McMacken). Floris of London scents are a favorite, as are fine linens from Brahms Mount, and the limited-edition copies of The Proust Questionnaire from Assouline publishing. "I really do become attached to each object," says Amanda. "After I sell something, I miss it. I hope it has gone somewhere where it will be appreciated and enjoyed—a treasured part of a home."
While she is trained as an interior designer and has worked with an acclaimed San Francisco firm, The Wiseman Group, it was only recently that Amanda merged her design talents with a new passion—retail. The MKID shop is located in the same space as Montgomery Klash Interior Design and is a natural progression for Amanda.
"Part of our mission as a design studio is to incorporate the treasured items collected in our clients’ lives into their homes," Amanda notes. "We try to capture the essence of their personalities and to create spaces that are unique to each person. I’ve extended this philosophy into the shop. My hope is that when someone leaves our shop, they take away with them ideas that inspire them in their own homes."
MKID is located at 1111 S.W. Alder Street in the West End district of Portland, Oregon (503/224-7797, or visit montgomeryklash.com ).
