Make all your friends and relatives feel welcome by creating a gorgeous guest room

Slide 1 Of Gorgeous Guest Bedrooms

Weekend guests. Summer visitors. Holiday company. Make all your friends and relatives feel welcome by creating a gorgeous guest room for them to call their own.

Lovely Guest Room
A harmonious color scheme drives this beautiful guest room. The walls are covered in Farrow & Ball’s “Light Blue,” which inspires soft blue details throughout the rest of the room. The headboard is upholstered in a Kravet raffia and dressed with a canopy and bed curtains in a bird-themed Ainsworth-Noah linen. Rivets on the headboard are just prominent enough to suggest dimension.

Cheerful Guest Room

A sun-and-sea theme works well in this vibrant bedroom. Yellow lacquered walls are balanced with turquoise details. Circular patterns repeat in the headboards, sunburst mirror, and unique antler chandelier. Designer Arden Stephenson says, “Every element needs to be carefully thought out so that it works with an overall scheme, but not every item should make a statement. Pieces have to work together, not compete.”

Relaxing Guest Room

Designer Matthew Patrick Smyth envisioned this gray-and-beige guest room as a traveler’s retreat whose palette would encourage relaxation. An Empire daybed made of iron and brass is topped with a regal pleated corona, embellished with nailheads and a silk trim. A sisal rug in a quatrefoil pattern adds texture to the floor, while custom fabricated panels framing the windows lend interest to the walls.

Blue & White Guest Room

After remodeling their house, these homeowners decided to embrace a blue-and-white palette, a perennial favorite for waterfront homes. In the guest room, the decorating takes a formal turn with a regal brass chandelier and a checked canopy that adds height to the tufted white headboard. The pillows and duvet are covered in a pretty blue-and-white damask print. Glints of gold warm the room and add some textural variety.

Bold and Comfortable Guest Room

Jack Levy describes this showhouse guest bedroom as a luxurious sanctuary. “A wonderful guest room should be a cocoon from the rest of the home, a place where your guests can close the door and be in their own little world.” A single delicate floral pattern throughout provides a sense of harmony. An audacious purple grass cloth covers the walls, making the palette seem rich but not overwhelming.

Seaside-Inspired Guest Room

Wanting a tranquil feeling for friends and family enjoying her guest room, designer and homeowner Barbara Franceski introduced an iron canopy bed from Niermann Weeks that creates a small room-within-a-room effect. Contrasting fabrics over the bed frame include the “Tamerlane” cotton print from Brunschwig & Fils, used for the outside canopy, and “Cardomon,” a geometric by Vervain that lines the canopy and repeats in the window treatment. A cream-colored matelassé quilt from Ralph Lauren Home softens the bed. The room’s statement fabrics, a green-and-white striped rug and sky-blue-and-white silk floor pillows by Schumacher, echo the colors of sea glass.

Classic Style Guest Bedroom

This homeowner wanted her new house to have an old-world feel. She achieved this effect by introducing fine woods, antique furniture, and classic patterns throughout her home. The guest bedroom is furnished with a 19th-century Sheraton-style chest made from beautifully grained tiger maple. A bench at the foot of the bed is covered in a striped fabric by Schumacher.

Serene Guest Room

Soft blues and greens envelop this bedroom in serenity. A tufted head- and footboard on the custom bed lend a classic feel, matching the antique night tables and armoire. Light woods, touches of gold, and a creamy carpet warm the space. Linens on the inviting bed are by Frette, and the classic lamps are by Visual Comfort.

Pattern Perfect

Wrapped in a striking, hand-blocked linen fabric with red flowers, this guest bedroom features a three-piece French suite that includes a settee and matching chairs, all upholstered in a textured, burlap-like linen; chair backs are covered in a coordinating oversized check pattern. “Even though this house is formally assembled, there are no fancy fabrics,” says designer Jack Fhillips. “Everything is cotton or linen—a little bit country but without cute painted furniture and distressed finishes.“ A jute area rug from ABC Home & Carpet softens the floors. A gilded English desk is from the 1890s.

Cozy Guest Room

Colorful details add charm and personality to this cozy guest room. Lavender hues take the lead, while a pale celadon-green window treatment tempers the energy of the hummingbird-motif wallpaper. A beautiful swag valance and whimsical bedside statues show that this bedroom was designed to make guests feel welcome.

Sunny Gust Bedroom

Feminine toiles and florals in soft shades of dusty blue and butter yellow give this guest bedroom a sunny attitude. Scalamandre linen toile dresses the Hickory Chair's cane chairs as well as the pillows, duvet, and bed skirt on the tester bed. Displayed as art, old plates add a pretty pop of color above the headboard. A shapely parrot lamp perches on the Tiffany-blue bedside table, offering plenty of light for late-night reading.

Artistic Guest Bedroom

A seductively stylish oasis, this tufted custom bed recalls the style of an old English Knole sofa. Covered in Ralph Lauren Home ticking, Yves Delorme linens, and an orange Hermes blanket, the bed was designed to make the guests feel pampered. Accessories such as the shaggy rope chair from Holly Hunt and an oil painting on an easel add an intriguing art-gallery attitude. The wicker trunk at the foot of the bed offers a convenient spot to park guests' belongings.

Simply Elegant Guestroom

Layers of worn texture and neutral fabrics mingle to create an atmosphere of elegant simplicity in this guest bedroom. An oatmeal-colored tufted headboard enhances ivory bed linens trimmed in contrasting brown. The same oatmeal linen used on the headboard is made into pinch-pleated drapery panels hanging from an iron rod. Ceiling-high bookshelves offer space to display art or provide options for bedtime reading.

Exotic Guest Bedroom

Smooth concrete walls and age-polished terra-cotta floors keep things cool in this room, both stylistically and physically. The earthy textures provide an unstudied background for the creative blend of furniture and objects. At the foot of a fanciful hammered-tin bed is a suzani (a Central Asian textile) in chic neutral tones. Hanging lamps beside the tin headboard leave space on petite bedside tables for night-time needs.

Soothing Guest Bedroom

Knowing that visitors bring clutter, guest rooms can benefit from a paucity of pattern and color. Here, a palette of cool neutrals -- eggshell, pale honey, and chocolate brown -- creates a soothing zenlike atmosphere. Corals on the window ledge add an organic presence. The framed sepia-tone photographs by Ron Van Dongen add interest without disturbing the restful atmosphere

Spring-Fresh Guest Room

Walls the color of palm fronds add a fresh touch to this bedroom, which charms with, floral prints, a collection of pottery plates, and a Wilton carpet strewn with roses. The white-painted night tables and plant stand contrast crisply with the richly colored walls. A polka-dot headboard and dust-ruffle fabric add a sweet touch.

Vintage-Look Guest Room

Guests of all ages enjoy this charming upstairs retreat with toile-covered walls and a romantic white mini-canopy above the upholstered headboard. Dressing the walls and ceiling in the same pattern wallpaper makes the small, awkwardly shaped room feel larger. The vanity-turned-nightstand offers ample space for grooming or working on the computer. Blue-and-white accent pieces add refreshing splashes of color against the soft green-and-white background.

Double-Duty Guest Room

A den doubles as a guest room that features a daybed (see next slide) plus a desk, comfortable seating, and bookshelves. In this neutral but graphic space, pattern comes in the form of zebra-style area rug and single color drapery panels banded with white.

Double-Duty Guest Room

Perfect for sleeping or curling up with a good book, this custom-made daybed turns a den into a bedroom. The daybed fabric coordinates with the drapery panels and ottoman fabric; all are from Rogers & Goffigan. Framed monkey prints add interest without screaming for attention.

Southwestern Guest Room

A rich palette of browns with pops of deep red and sage green mimics the desert landscape beyond the windows, connecting occupants with the outdoors. The red-and-black striped fabric for the headboard and footboard (from Ralph Lauren Home) adds pizzazz, particularly against the deep gold walls. As the homeowner requested, the overall effect is Southwestern without being kitschy.

French-Inspired Guest Room

A misty-blue French floral disguises this period guest bedroom's imperfections in a field of delicate flowers on the walls, in the French-pleated window panels, and in the bed skirt. The circa 1850 four-poster bed is topped with a blue antique quilt and a comforter in a sunny tone-on-tone yellow-checked silk. The late-19th-century crystal chandelier is another example of refined French decoration. Queen Anne-style chairs offer comfortable seating.

Global Guest Room

A monochromatic palette of neutrals demands extra effort to enrich the mix with objects and textures of enough interest to keep boredom at bay. Here, an old Swedish daybed mixes with a primitive African footstool, a Lucite pedestal table, a woven basket, and two very different types of rugs: sisal and an old Oushak. A heavy-linen cotton fabric on the daybed's pillows sports a Moorish-style pattern.

Pastel Guest Room

Several shades of lavender give this guest room a sweet personality, ranging from barely-there lavender on the walls to near-purple banding on the coverlets. An elegant lavender print was chosen for the twin beds' upholstered headboards. Guests share a nightstand, but get their own reading lights for comfort. An illuminated oil painting serves as a refined focal point.
