A 2,200-square-foot townhome designed for a single sophisticate

Slide 1 Of Atlanta Showhouse: Girls just wanna have fun

Picture a Titian-haired Carrie Bradshaw-meets-Marie Antoinette. That’s who Scott Laslie imagined when he designed a residence for the Traditional Home Built for Women Showhouse III. “She wants the best and has the best. And she’s definitely a redhead,” he says, with a laugh.

Laslie designed a 2,200-square-foot townhome for a single sophisticate as part of the Traditional Home showhouse project in Woodstock, Georgia, a historic community 20 miles north of Atlanta. Award-winning Atlanta builder Pam Sessions of Hedgewood Properties developed Woodstock Downtown, a community that combines nearly 400 residences—flats above shops, single-family homes, and townhouses—with shops, parks, and office spaces. The small-town-like atmosphere fosters neighborly relationships, while the proximity to Atlanta gives easy access to big-city culture, shopping, and entertainment.

In the living room, elegant pin-tucked draperies made of Jim Thompson silk sateen are paired with rustic turned-walnut tables. Painted Moroccan screens flank a French-inspired sofa, and modern club chairs sit by a vintage glass-top coffee table.

The room’s ivory, turquoise, and coral color palette was inspired by the English Wilton rug Laslie found in New York, and it was perfect for his redhead sophisticate. Laslie really does personalize his color palettes. “We look at hair, skin, eyes, and what’s going to complement and work best for her,” he says. “After all, she wants to glow at her own party.”

The living room showcases the homeowner’s travels and family treasures, along with Laslie’s twist on traditional design. An antique Swedish secretary is accessorized with a collection of porcelain Asian masks and doll heads. The modern fireplace—featuring a polished quartz surround, bronze-tinted mirror, and polished nickel fire screen dotted with crystals—is combined with a framed antique oval mirror.

The first time Laslie walked through the three-level townhouse, he saw party potential. “It was still in the framing stages, but I could tell this definitely was an entertaining unit. It had really nice flow,” Laslie says. “None of the rooms in the main living area were separate from each other,” he adds. “There’s a circular pattern on the main level, which is great for parties.” The open arrangement makes for easy traffic flow when entertaining and allows natural light to brighten spaces during the day.

Inspired by the natural light, Laslie coated the ceilings and trims with a high-gloss ivory paint. Walls have an eggshell finish for a slight sheen. “I’m really big on how light hits a space. I like to bounce light off reflective surfaces,” Laslie says.

Morning light floods the east-facing front room, which serves as both a dining room and a gathering area. “The house has no formal foyer, so we needed a space where people could gather when they come upstairs, as well as a place for our girl to drop off keys and mail,” Laslie says.

On the opposite end of the room, Laslie created an intimate dining area for six. “I thought her dining style would be less formal,” Laslie says. “She would tend to have small sit-down dinner parties.” Rather than centering the table in the room, Laslie pushed it toward a wall close to a banquette tucked between two tall antique Chinese chests. Rattan dining chairs painted a glossy white provide more seating around the oval glass-top and acrylic-base table. A clear Venetian-glass chandelier, the see-through table, and the open weave of the chairs give the dining area a light and breezy feel, while nubby-textured fabric on the chair seats keeps it warm and tailored. “I like that the furniture has sort of a fashion edge. The fabric on the chair seats is reminiscent of a Chanel jacket,” Laslie explains.

An interior window above the sink allows for light flow and lets our hostess see (and be seen by) arriving guests when she’s in the compact galley kitchen. Upper cabinets and walls are painted the same neutral ivory to keep the room feeling clean and uncluttered. “Bottom cabinets are a darker finish, and that grounds the room,” Laslie says. An Art Deco-inspired tile in blue, green, and cream tones adds an artistic touch and repeats the dining-area and living-room color palettes. Matte finishes on the tile as well as honed quartz countertops contrast with the high-gloss finishes on the ceiling and the light fixture above the sink.

For the master bedroom, Laslie chose a brown-and-cream block-print fabric for draperies and an upholstered headboard. Pink accents in pillows, rug, and accessories—and a sensational 42-inch-diameter acrylic and steel chandelier—make the room “more girlie,” says Laslie. “It’s very modern-day Marie Antoinette.” Mirrors installed over the windows like transoms make the windows appear taller and “bounce light” around the room.

The sparkle continues in the master bath, where Tile artisan Erin Adams working through Ann Sacks Tile designed a stunning backdrop for the Kohler whirlpool tub and nickel faucets. Vertical stripes of recycled aluminum beading and white and brown glass tiles create a pattern that mimics bamboo. For added impact, the design is reflected in a ceiling-high mirror above the double vanities on the opposite wall.

A guest room on the upper level fosters comfort with an antique French daybed, grass-cloth wall coverings, woven wood shades, and draperies in a warm floral fabric. “We wanted this room to be neutral, where any guest would feel comfortable, whether it’s the homeowner’s mother or a girlfriend,” Laslie says.

Observing light is one of Scott Laslie’s talents. The Atlanta designer watches how it shifts through a room, bouncing off shiny surfaces and melting into loosely woven fabrics. “It’s important to me to see how light hits a space,” he says. “I like to use a variety of fabrics—silk sateens, wools, cottons—because light hits each fiber differently. It’s a nice way to give a room another sort of sparkle.”

Scott Laslie and Associates is a full-service interior design business with a focus on residential projects—both renovations and new construction. Although based in Atlanta, the firm has done projects throughout the United States. Laslie studied art and interior architecture at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, and worked for several years with Atlanta designer Stan Topol before starting his own business (Scott Laslie and Associates, 404/532-1900; scottlaslie.com [37]).
