Bedtime Confessions: Heather Garrett

Produced by Clara Haneberg

My nighttime ritual includes: Chardonnay, Erno Lazlo on my face (for 25 years!), and something to read (I've gone back to paper...currently an unnamed self-help book and Hemingway's For Whom The Bell Tolls).

My favorite childhood bedtime story was… Anything (not involving sharp teeth) from Shell Silverstein's children's poetry book, Where The Sidewalk Ends. My favorite poem was called "Sick".

When I can’t sleep I… Use my Zensong app on the iPad. "Soothing Rain" reminds me of summer nights in Oregon.

My childhood bedroom looked like: An English garden! My mom has an amazing eye, and when I was little she had my bed and drapery made from an English polished cotton print, Muguet, by Sanderson. I'm so old now, it's "vintage"! My room had a doll house I adored, and the window by my bed always had a Cardinal or Blue Jay's nest in progress.

My current bedroom looks like:

My go-to bedtime snack is: Dry cereal

I am a: stomach, side, or back- sleeper. Side, arm under head, putting my hand to sleep.

T.V. in bed? If so, what’s on? I moved my bedroom into a room with a TV already on the wall. I pretended to protest, but I love it. During the week I'll watch Charlie Rose or old 30 Rock episodes, because Tina Fey's Liz Lemon is my alter ego.

Which Jimmy: Kimmel or Fallon? Fallon. His smile is a sneak attack, and his hair does whatever it wants.

Pets in bed?  Yes. For my entire life, a longhair cat has been in my bed.

My bedtime wardrobe consists of: One from a pile of big t-shirts from high school or college and fuzzy socks

What’s your stance on earplugs and eye-masks? I'm half-deaf anyway, so earplugs aren't an asset for me. But darkness is key. I keep an eye mask and blanket in my office at work. My friend Jamie Meares says I look like a hornet when I wear it. :)

Fill in the blank: I sleep _______ on planes. Immediately

My duvet and bed linens are… John Robshaw cotton and Very Wrinkly Restoration Hardware Belgian linen.

What’s on your nightstand?  Books I think I should be reading, 2 lamps (1 that looks good, and 1 that actually produces light), my iPad, Vitamin E for my lips, and emergency eyeglasses for times I can't find my real ones.

My bedtime is at approximately: 11 p.m.

I aim for __ hours of sleep each night: 8

Are you an early riser, or do you prefer to sleep in? My kids are entering high school, so we 3 are finally ALL on the same schedule preference: LATE TO RISE!
