Glimmering Showhouse Kitchen
The 2016 Hampton Designer Showhouse kitchen reflects a move toward transitional style
Hamptons homes haven’t shed a single shingle of their classic style, but they are receiving a cool, contemporary architectural update that’s generating new creativity in interior design—including kitchen spaces.
“We’re seeing black exterior window frames, light floors, more glass and metal,” says Robert Bakes, president of kitchen design firm Bakes & Kropp and designer of the 2016 Hampton Designer Showhouse kitchen. “Homes have become more transitional in style, and we wanted to create something that spoke to that.”
For starters, Bakes and business partner Paul Kropp, the company’s CFO and a master craftsman, came up with a new cabinetry door style, “Revelane,” inspired by the evolution of Hamptons style. “It’s cleaner and sleeker,” Bakes says.
High function and high style meet in this kitchen and breakfast area. The work zone connects with an island that offers prep space on one side, gathering space on the other. CR Laine upholstered bar stools and chairs add a soft touch that balances sleek Silestone by Cosentino countertops.

A hand-painted gloss-white finish on cabinetry paired with a custom beige stain on ash drawer fronts layers in interest. The sandy beige echoes the ash island base, while the gloss finish, Bakes says, brings depth and luxury.
Glimmering metals provide the design’s edgy accent mark. Sleek and slim cabinetry hardware is polished nickel, as are the custom hinges created by Bakes for the dual refrigerator/freezer unit. Its stainless-steel doors contrast with the white-painted cabinetry surround.

The metal melody continues in the cooking zone, where a stainless-steel range sits beneath a custom hood crafted of brushed steel and polished nickel.
The designer kept function foremost, molding the primary work zone into a tight U-shape footprint, then working outward to create secondary activity centers. The range sits at the center of the action, just a step from the cold-storage cabinet on one side and the main sink on the other.
Two-tone finishes on the Bakes & Kropp cabinetry harmonize with multihue Crossville tile from the Yin + Yang collection and a Thermador range. Metal inserts glint from the natural-stone tile backsplash.
The sink’s apron-front style speaks to traditional design while its stainless-steel finish honors the home’s move toward a transitional vibe. Likewise, the bridge -faucet stays current with clean lines and a polished-nickel finish.

An island parallel to the range wall offers a secondary sink and prep space on one side, casual bar stool seating on the other. Quartz tops the washed-ash island base and perimeter counters, continuing the kitchen’s sleek, chic look while not stealing too much attention. “We wanted to let the cabinetry speak, so we kept the counters simple,” Bakes says.
Between the island and glass doors leading out to the patio—and alongside a light-filled window seat—Bakes placed an antique X-base breakfast table under a leather-and-polished-nickel chandelier.

Convenient to the table, two cabinetry units separated by the window seat stretch to the crown molding, offering a wealth of storage and handy beverage service. The unit closest to the island houses a coffee center, while the one on the patio side boasts a wine-storage niche.

The twin cabinets continue the designer’s attention to pleasing symmetry. “I like a sense of balance, without being driven by it,” Bakes says. “I also love the way this space flows so easily from one area to another. It makes for a kitchen that’s easy to live in.”
