Alfresco Style at the Hampton Designer Showhouse

The 2016 Hampton Designer Showhouse inspires with ideas for sophisticated and comfortable fresh-air living

Warm summer days lure us outside to enjoy sunshine, cool breezes, and the beauty of nature. A great space to relax or entertain friends makes those days even better. Take a tip from designers at the 2016 Hampton Designer Showhouse, who have a wealth of ideas to help you shape a well-appointed and inviting outdoor room.

Covered Porch

In creating this welcoming gathering space near the pool, designer Erin Gates put together her own fusion of Hamptons style. “I wanted the space to cohesively combine the various looks seen in Hamptons homes—preppy traditional, laid-back bohemian, and coastal modern,” she says. “I hoped to convey a sense of fun while also making it elegant.” To add interior-worthy style to the setting, built around a teak dining table and bistro chairs from Frontgate, Gates hung drapery panels and a beaded chandelier. “I adore the bold stripes of the draperies dramatically framing the beautiful pool and yard—and how they add a sense of coziness,” she says. “And the gorgeous chandelier—it’s hard to believe that’s an outdoor fixture.”

Rear Terrace

Keith Baltimore put practicality at the forefront of his design for the terrace area right outside this Hamptons home. “I like that every-thing can stay out there and nothing needs care,” he says. “It makes things so easy and stress-free for a homeowner. Baltimore created a symmetrical layout using four “Ravello” lounge chairs to ring the “Milano” round coffee table, all by Frontgate. “The midcentury modern, Italian-inspired rattan chairs with this table make the space feel very current,” he says. Tucked into an adjacent corner of the terrace, “Milo” armless lounge chairs by Porta Forma for Frontgate, spiced by cabana stripe pillows, offer more seating. “Everybody wants to feel like they’re at a resort in their own backyard,” Baltimore says. “That cabana vibe makes you feel that you’re living like a billionaire.” An oversize lamp injects a sculptural element that’s also very functional.

Pool Surround

Denise Rinfret and Missy Rinfret Minicucci brought a clean, crisp, preppy energy to the pool surround, where umbrella-shaded double “Metropolitan” chaise longues from Frontgate, paired with a “Baleares” covered lounger, provide elegant spots for relaxing by the water in cushioned comfort. “The oxford blue cloth with piping against the white wicker is classic Southampton,” Minicucci says. “Paired with the contemporary lines of the furniture, it creates a chic, young look. Our design is always classic with a kick.”

The mother-daughter team chose double chaises with a shared table to create a comfortable, social environment. A single large lounger is the spot’s statement piece. “It separates the various gathering areas around the pool,” Minicucci says, “and offers a place to read or just cocoon.”
