Walkway

Nestled amid bluestones is a delightful nosegay of ‘Bronze Beauty’ ajuga.

Front Parterre

Behind the historic home’s colonial-style fence is a small parterre, which is planted with boxwood, ivy, and dwarf mondo grass.

Exterior

Lovingly restored, the 1743 Georgian is one of the earlier homes in historic Charleston.

White Blooms

As befits its restrained English style, many of the blooms in the garden are white. (Gardeners often remind us that green and white are colors!)

Carriageway

An old mooring post is a focal point here, set against the backdrop of a towering camphor tree.

Garden Bench

In the period “Charleston garden,” a Lutyens-style bench is flanked by graceful urns. Enclosed with brick-and-stucco walls, the garden is a tranquil place to entertain.

Rose

One of the ‘Iceberg’ roses that climb the kitchen house wall.

Formal Parterre

Ben designed the space in the manner of 17th-century English-patterned gardens. Note a charming relic, the mooring post, by the hedge.

Garden House

The picturesque structure was formerly a privy.

Urn

Potted petunias, geraniums, violas, and roses form an elegant grouping.

Cascading Blooms

Cascading blooms give the grounds a lush look.

Textures

The textures of foliage add to the garden’s understated elegance.
