White Hydrangeas

Lacecap hydrangeas embellish the landscape.

Terrace

A bistro table on the rear terrace beckons guests outside. “This is the perfect spot for morning coffee and taking in the view,” Mary Finch says. Garden cuttings are used as bouquets—indoors and out.

Purple Salvia

Salvia reaches up from the garden, adding bright color.

Beautiful Backyard View

The back terrace overlooks a parterre and the Appalachian Mountains across the valley.

Light Pink Bracteantha

A pot bursts with look-at-me Bracteantha bracteata cultivar “Dreamtime Jumbo.”

Garden Path

A stone pathway winds around the home’s rear facade.

Garden Gate

Wrought iron adds vintage charm to the garden.

Purple Linaria

Fragrant Linaria hybrida flourishes in cooler climates, blooming all season.

View From Indoors

French doors open up the home to the garden and sweeping views of the Appalachian Mountains beyond.

Homeowner Mary Finch

Mary takes in the garden from the kitchen’s Dutch door.

Parterre

Added by Mary and consulting gardener Norman Kent Johnson, the parterre is the only nod to formal French design. Four urns, two of which were original to the house, mark corners.

Pink Schizanthus

Schizanthus x wisetonensis blooms annually in full or partial light, perfect for this sun-dappled garden.

Open Windows

Windows flung open enhance the indoor-outdoor flow and invite in the fresh air.

Green Alleé

An allée of potted vitex is set on gravel.

Fragile Blossoms

Cyclamen hederifolium “Purple Flame” looks delicate, but is able to survive diverse climates.

Patio

An open-air patio provides the perfect place for a glass of wine. Lanterns hanging from the dividing wall provide soft light after the sun goes down.

Fountain

The fountain, a happy accident, according to Mary, came about because of an awkward void. “I wanted to fix it before a party, so we just started digging,” she says. The pool they created was a perfect spot for a copper cherub she brought with her when she moved in.

Red Verbena

Easy to care for, Verbenaceae verbena “Voodoo Star” attracts butterflies, birds, and bees to the garden.

Stone Cherubs

Cherubs are a focal point in the center of the parterre garden.
