Amanda Nisbet is the first to proclaim she is "no enemy to any color!" The New York interior designer is also the first to know when to rein it in. Like a peacock fanning its plumes, then pulling them tight again, her palette performs a strut-and-restrain ritual in the oceanfront condominium she designed for Traditional Home's Oceans 3 Showhouse-one of three residential retreats designed by three notable New York designers and their protégés. (Look for the other two, by designers Eric Cohler and Philip Gorrivan, in upcoming issues of Traditional Home.) All three units belong to a freshly renovated 50-year-old Panoramic View resort located at the tip of Long Island in Montauk, where the Hamptons yield for good to the Atlantic. Perched on a hillside directly above the ocean, the 10-acre resort is being renovated by architect Alexander D. Latham III and builder Oak Gentry for developer Adam Manson of Distinctive Ventures LLC.
With every room commanding uninterrupted views of the Atlantic clear to the horizon-a high-ranking goal of the resort's renovation-the designer had little choice but to acknowledge her setting. "Of course I didn't want to forgo the sea completely," she concedes. "Blue-and-white is lovely, timeless, and classic, but I wanted to show people that there are lots of other routes they can take."
