In the main living space, Cohler pays homage to the ocean with the window treatments-simple panels fabricated in a watery ikat-style silk fabric from Lee Jofa's "Threads" line-and the wavy pattern on the Tamarian "Diamond Swirl" area rug. "I wanted the design to allude to the environment rather than speak to it directly. I didn't want any seashell designs on fabric or any seaweed pattern on pillows."
The palette reflects the tones of the beach and sea, "but the design stops short of being symbiotic with the natural surroundings," explains Cohler. Instead, the site becomes subordinate to more universal decorating principles that the designer adheres to in all of his projects. "I wanted the spaces to have a global view, not just that of a beach house," he notes.
