Essentially one long rectangle carved up three ways, the room features a decadently roomy tub for two in its central shared section, with his-and-her areas holding court at opposite ends. Even within the shared area, the couple’s individual needs are addressed: Two identical armoires are organized inside for him and for her.
“Couples don’t share computers, and they don’t want to share a bath,” notes California certified bath and kitchen designer Toshie Lim, co-designer of the space. “This bathroom design provides them the privacy they need, while also offering them an opportunity to spend time together in a common middle space. That shared area, with its tub for two, isn’t a typical bathroom concept so much as it is a lounge concept—a space where the couple can relax together. That’s a step in a positive direction not only for bathrooms, but for relationships.” An extra-high freestanding Kallista tub is the centerpiece.
“One of my goals in designing the bath was to provide ideas,” says Young. “Showing people that Corian isn’t just for counters is one of them.” In the common area, he outlined the oversized tub with Corian. “The Corian ‘rug’ protects the wood floor around the tub,” he says.
