One of Russia’s most devastating cultural losses in World War II was the looting of the Amber Room, an Imperial Palace space walled in hand-carved and goldleaf-backed amber panels. It had been a gift from Prussia’s Friedrich Wilhelm I to Peter the Great in 1716. Although Russia’s reproduction of the Amber Room was completed in
2003, what happened to the original marvel is still a mystery.
