VIRGO / August 23–September 22
Caretaker Virgo brings out the caring side of design: Ken Wampler founded Alpha Workshops, to provide training and employment in interior design for people with HIV/AIDS; the pet cause of TV design star Nate Berkus is the EIF (Entertainment Industry Foundation) Revlon Run/Walk, which raises money for the eradication of cancers in women (the designer’s grandmother died of the disease), and Blake Mycoskie is the philanthropic entrepreneur who masterminded TOMS Shoes. TOMS Shoes designs and sells lightweight shoes; for every pair of shoes sold, the company donates a pair of shoes to a person in need.
LIBRA / September 23–October 22
Many of the world’s top decorators are Libras, and former President Jimmy Carter—with his wife, former First Lady and Leo Rosalynn Carter—displays the Libran affinity for creating comfortable living spaces by spending one week out of each year working with Habitat for Humanity to build decent, affordable homes for those who need them.
SCORPIO / October 23–November 21
With the motto that “All lives have equal value,” the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, under the direction of Scorpio Microsoft founder Bill Gates, his Leo wife Melinda, and Virgo investor Warren Buffett hired NBBJ Architects to design its Seattle headquarters. The campus and buildings were awarded LEED Platinum Certification, reflecting the foundation’s commitment to innovation, healthy communities and workplaces, and resource conservation.
SAGITTARIUS / November 22–December 21
It makes sense for a globe-trotting Sadge, the zodiac’s intrepid traveler, to care about the vista while s/he’s out there on the road. Not surprisingly, classic Sagittarian Bette Midler is driven to support “Adopt a Highway” in its effort to reduce roadside trash, and has taken many roads in New York and Los Angeles under her preservationist wing.
CAPRICORN / December 22–January 19
Capricorn botanist Nathaniel Lord Britton’s hard work (and a picturesque property donated by Libra tobacco magnate Pierre Lorillard) sowed the seeds for the magnificent New York Botanical Garden, which blooms beautifully in the Bronx. On the NYBG’s illustrious first board of managers were Britton plus Sagittarians Andrew Carnegie and Cornelius Vanderbilt II, as well as Arien J. Pierpont Morgan.
AQUARIUS / January 20–February 18
Aquarian actress Linda Blair created the 501(c)(3) Linda Blair WorldHeart Foundation to rescue animals throughout Los Angeles. With the help of generous donors and a flair for critter comforts, Blair operates her scenic desert homestead in Acton, California, as a safe, cozy haven for adoptable pets to enjoy
