This is the last time Bill Ohs experiments on his own kitchen—at least in the Denver home he shares with wife Nancy. After three remodels since 1979, Bill says that the current version (prototype for his European-inspired “Wm Ohs Renaissance” cabinet line) is it. “This style is simply the most elegant, classic kitchen in America,” says the designer with obvious pride.
The Ohs kitchen is a long, narrow space that dictated a short work triangle. Just as well, Bill says. Nancy is a serious cook and would just as soon have guests who wander into the kitchen stay on “their” side of the island. But Bill describes it as “convivial.”
Obviously, the room showcases Bill’s cabinets, but it also illustrates how planning and good design can help elevate kitchen operations. For example, hidden in the oversized toe-kicks are extra storage drawers and, in front of tall cabinets, pullout steps. A pullout cabinet holds spices and small bottles. Another cabinet, next to the sink, holds paper towels, sponges, and brushes, and has a pullout rack for hanging dishtowels. And instead of a lazy Susan, Bill installed a pullout cupboard door in a corner, with storage racks that significantly improve access. He also installed a pullout rack for storing table wine.
