Another space recently redone is the foyer, whose fresh look actually is the silver lining of a household accident. “A sofa was being moved from upstairs, and it was dropped and ruined the foyer floor,” Dan explains. The subsequent cover-up paint job over the damaged wood features brown geometrics offset by 14 shades of white paint.
“I like to do that sort of thing—just sand it down, and you’re done. This kind of faux stone was done by Palladio centuries ago, and even before that. The man who thinks he’s original has no memory. The way to personalize something is to bring yourself into it.”
The foyer’s 19th-century bamboo lamp table (one of a pair) stands beside a wall of vintage photos and a Bruce Hafley still life in oils; the octagonal table is 18th-century Moroccan.
