Charlotte Moss has admitted that she got her design gene from her grandmother in Virginia, whose homespun Sunday lunches for the family were a weekly highlight. More to the point, Moss also got the hospitality gene. The celebrated New York designer's signature style resonates with Southern graciousness, whether in her interiors or collections of fabric, carpets, furniture, china, and linens.
Moss's interiors are a graceful convergence of elegance and livability, and they have everything to do with one well-selected decorative accessory after the other. She believes in the personal treasures that make a room more individual, more beautiful, more alive-hand-carved boxes, notepaper, tumblers, an elegant desk set, votives, a silver tray, a cashmere throw.
And then there's the matter of how these are thrown together-casually, gracefully, flawlessly. Moss's feminine sensibility comes with a reputable pedigree: Elsie de Wolfe and Nancy Lancaster are inspirations, and she has named her fabric collections for Colette, Vanessa Bell, and Daphne du Maurier. Best of all, the designer is also the author of six books about decorating, most recently Charlotte Moss: Flair for Living, in which she shows the rest of us how to do it.-Akiko Busch
