There is nothing quite like watching individuals do what they were born to do. That’s why it gives us such pleasure to announce our annual list of emerging young designers with backgrounds as varied as their aesthetics. Consider Summer Thornton’s advice to do at least one thing your mother wouldn’t, Heather Garrett’s mantra that nothing made by man is as beautiful as that found in nature, or Katie Lydon’s edict that every room should have pieces that give it gravitas and soul. Whether they were born on a Louisiana bayou or in London—or gained their experience redecorating Barbie mansions or browsing through Sotheby’s catalogs—we are deeply impressed by the mix of intuition, education, passion, and sheer talent possessed by our own group of 10. We think you will be, too.
Designer Taylor Borsari describes the dining room pictured above: “This dining room in a historic beach house in California was inspired by the clients' love of pattern and the desire to create a cheerful, fun, family-friendly space. Our goal was to incorporate texture, pattern, and subtle color that was not overtly ‘beachy.’ The vintage light and cabinet help add patina and a connection to the age of the house, while the fabric-covered walls and the sisal rug add texture and interest.”
