Nothing says "welcome" quite like a gracious front porch. And this country home in Connecticut is serving up one warm welcome with its street-facing covered porch. The home, a 1920s Sears Roebuck kit house, features white wood plank siding and charming green shutters. The porch swing and a pair of rocking chairs encourage relaxing over morning coffee or an evening cocktail and are ideal for reading quietly or chatting with neighbors who walk by.

California Ranch House
The modern ranch house has its roots in agriculture, where the style was often found on working ranches and haciendas. This particular ranch house, with its covered front stoop, cupola, and relatively low-lying profile, serves up that farmhouse feeling.

Farmhouse Chic
An upbringing on an Alabama farm paired with a career in fashion led to a chic spin on farmhouse style for this homeowner. A soaring pecky cypress ceiling and wood floors set the stage while clerestory windows let in abundant light. Antique pieces—see the doors above the mantel and the cane-back chair—mingle effortlessly with a gleaming chandlier and marble fireplace surround. Slipcovered seating reflects the easygoing lifestyle befitting a Florida beach house.

Barn Living
The steeply pitched ceiling of a traditional working barn—born out of function—is mimicked in this Vermont home. Designed to fit the regional vernacular, this stylish and spacious "barn" serves as a guest house and gathering spot. Wooden beams, a soaring stone fireplace, and polished concrete floors evoke a rustic vibe while walls of windows allow unmatched views of the countryside.

Quiet Palette
The stone fireplace in the great room was the jumping-off point for this Martha's Vineyard home's subdued palette. Reclaimed oak beams and floors, V-groove ceilings, paneled walls, and hand-wrought masonry create an always-been-there feel for the new home. Woodwork stained soft gray with a matte finish takes on the appearance of weathered shingles.

Farmhouse-Style Kitchen
Shiplap siding—a farmhouse favorite—climbs the walls in this white Napa kitchen. Wood floors and a brown island base introduce warmth to the space. Rustic touches come courtesy of a reclaimed-wood barn beam crowning the range hood and distressed-finish lanterns illuminating the island.

Filled with Character
Tracery detailing on the ceiling adds a been-here-for-decades kind of character to this kitchen, where black-and-white tile underfoot is equally charming. Bronze hardware warms up white shaker-style cabinets, and a window above the farmhouse-style sink offers views outside.

Contemporary Farmhouse
Walls and stairs painted a crisp white provide a fresh contrast to the warm tones of the barn-height ceiling. The slatted railing and loft area area make use of the tall space but maintain the room's airy, open feeling. An x-base dining table nods to farmhouse style, while dining chairs embellished with nailhead trim provide a tailored look. Above the dining table, a large square chandelier is a contemporary focal point.

Charming Dining Area
Sweet simplicity dominates this casual eating area. Surrounded by windows on three sides, guests lucky enough to dine at this round farmhouse-style table will be rewarded with stunning views of the surrounding Georgia countryside. Antique dining chairs bring a storied charm to the table while a tribal-print rug adds a touch of color—and warmth—underfoot.

Past and Present
Beaded-board walls and a shiplap ceiling—the opposite of typical applications—were discovered during the renovation of this 1840 cottage. In the dining room, the white shiplap, gray walls, and natural wood flooring speak to simpler times. A sculptural light fixture, contemporary art, and an updated take on Windsor chairs bring the room into the 21st century.

Cozy Nook
Shiplap walls are striking in their simplicity. In this quaint bump-out, little is needed to create a cozy window seat. Throw pillows and a soft blanket in subdued gray tones underscore the restful nature of the space.

Rustic Bath
Wide-plank, rough-hewn cedar painted white unifies the walls in this Colorado cottage. Left natural, one of the bathroom walls exudes a cool, rugged texture. The plank look is continued in the walk-in shower with large tiles installed to mimic the cedar walls. An industrial caged double sconce illuminates the wall-mount sink.

Refined Style
Rough-hewn wood walls painted white have a character fitting this century-old house. Custom vanity cabinets finished to resemble antique furniture are topped with sleek marble. A hand-knotted rug adds a burst of warm red to the honed slate floors. The materials used will patinate over time and continue to enrich this home with the stories of its occupants.
