Rising star Ryan Saghian is attracting notice in the Los Angles design scene for his well-appointed interiors that incorporate elements of Old Hollywood opulence. The millennial designer’s striking style, which puts a modern-day spin on classic elements, landed him a spot on the new Bravo show Best Room Wins!, where he appeared with legendary designer Martyn Lawrence Bullard. In conjunction with the show’s premise, getting a million-dollar look without actually spending that kind of cash, Saghian offers these tips to get the most from your interior design dollar.
Refresh Classic Pieces You Already Have
There’s no need to go out and buy a roomful of new furniture, Saghian says. Vintage furniture pieces—a Hollywood Regency chair, for example—were built to last, and their silhouettes ground a room in classic good taste. Keep the chair, but update it. Give it a fresh paint finish and reupholster it with a luxe contemporary fabric. Your stylish old chair will look like new.
Don’t Overlook the Ceiling
So many ceilings are painted plain old white. That’s a waste of interior design real estate—a swath of space that could be making a stunning statement. Saghian likes to dress up ceilings in a way that’s appropriate to the house—consider installing a removeable wallpaper or adding a molding treatment that instantly gives a room good bones. “It totally transforms a space and makes it more luxurious,” he says.
Make a Smart Investment in Art
“Art doesn’t have to be expensive to make a statement,” Saghian says. “Nor does it have to be mass-produced to be affordable.” He likes to seek out talented young artists on Etsy or at local art fairs and then frame the pieces himself. Another way to get more impact from art—reframe pieces you already have in a fresh new way to update the piece for today. Can’t get the impact you want from a standard frame? Consider showing off your art piece in an acrylic box. It’s guaranteed to give you a seriously glamourous look.
Dress Up Your Draperies
Custom draperies give a room the feeling of true luxury. Get the look without spending a fortune by buying solid-color linen drapery panels and then hiring a local seamstress to stitch on your chosen trim. You’ll love the look, and your rooms will definitely be dressed to impress.
