Perched atop the Shrewsbury River banks in Little Silver, New Jersey, The Hartshorne Mansion—an 11,000-square-foot Tudor-style home built in 1929—served as the perfect setting for the fourth installment of the Stately Homes By-the-Sea Designer Showhouse. It was originally built for Harold Hartshorne, a successful stockbroker and five-time United States ice-dance champion. Since the biennial showhouse event debuted in 2007, it continues to entice guests with intriguing designs from the region’s most sought-after talents. The springtime staple demonstrating the latest in Garden State style also gives back, benefiting the Visiting Nurse Association of Central Jersey. Join us as we revisit the most recent showhouse to prep your design palate before this year’s event, April 28–May 31.

The 2015 Stately Homes By-the-Sea Designer Showhouse is located in Rumson, New Jersey, and is open from Tuesday, April 28 through Sunday, May 31. For tickets or special event information, visit statelyhomesbythesea.com or call the Visiting Nurse Association Health Group Foundation at 732/224-6780.

Library by Joe Lucas & Parrish Chilcoat

“We pictured it as a library, but also as a place where the family could eat smaller meals together,” says Joe Lucas, who collaborated with Parrish Chilcoat to design the cozy space that serves several functions. The nook, with lush green views, is an ideal gathering spot. Oval-backed dining chairs with soft-pink cushions and scrolled arms encircle the round iron-and-cerused-oak table. Original oak paneling warms the room where sunlight streams through leaded windows adorned with linen Roman shades.

As a lover of layering, Linda Benson had no problem adding texture to the sunroom. She started by installing latticework and wood-trim moldings over some of the existing brick wall. Natural materials—note the bamboo shades, wicker chairs, and sisal rug—keep to the coastal theme.

    Kitchen by Jim Dove

Designing with the intention of hosting a large group, Jim Dove made sure to equip the kitchen with plenty of cooktops and counter space. “I wanted guests to experience a sense of openness and ease,” he says. The bright, airy room boasts an original brick wall, white cabinetry, and stainless steel appliances. Water views reflect beautifully off the double islands with mirrored ends and chinoiserie fretwork. Overhead, hanging lanterns provide atmospheric light for evening entertaining.

    Dining Room by Mark Polo

The ceiling’s eye-catching plaster relief drove Mark Polo’s dining room design. He set out to modernize the space while maintaining its English Tudor styling. To reflect the nearby ocean, Polo refinished the dark-brown wood trim in driftwood gray. A variety of furniture forms meet and mingle around the architectural table. “I love benches—they create a togetherness unachievable with chairs,” he explains. A gilt side table affords extra surface area when entertaining. Pumpkin-hued touches in artwork and accent pillows play off the wing chair’s upholstery. A horse statue and foo dogs add whimsy.

    Guest Suite by Lauren Guarcello

When formulating her design concept, Lauren Guarcello envisioned the guest bedroom as belonging to a grown woman who occasionally returns to her childhood home. “It’s a mix of playful colors, graphic elements, and traditional coastal design,” she says. Near the fireplace, a pink wing chair, a pair of benches, and a quatrefoil mirror flaunt feminine curves.
