Stately Homes by-the-Sea Designer Showhouse 2011

The Stately Homes by-the-Sea Showhouse boasts beautiful designs with water views

Dozens of holly trees decorate aptly named Holly Hill, the picturesque property that played host to New Jersey’s most recent Stately Homes by-the-Sea Designer Showhouse. More than 35 of the region’s top designers and landscapers helped decorate the 30-room country estate and its blossoming gardens to benefit the Visiting Nurse Association of Central Jersey. Since its debut in 2007, this biennial event has become one of the area’s most anticipated—enticing guests with its unique Garden State style. Traditional Home is proud to serve as the national media sponsor for the second consecutive year.

    Diane Durocher, Multipurpose Room

“The ‘unplugged’ home office reflects the serenity one experiences at the beach,” says Diane Durocher, whose multipurpose room offers plenty of places to relax, read, and work via tablet or laptop. Tranquil artwork reminiscent of New Jersey’s Navesink River decorates linen-colored walls that set off the darker tone of the sumptuous custom sofa. A crystal table lamp and the large, intricately framed mirror (previous slide) add sparkle to the studious setting.

    Lauren Stern, Breakfast Nook

Part of the great room, the breakfast nook is a gorgeous, homey space. Pops of cheerful pink, a bronze chandelier by Hinkley Lighting, and wood flooring from Shaw Floors add contrast to the neutral palette. The bronze armillary in front of the window is a favorite of designer Lauren Stern.

    Lauren Stern, Breakfast Nook

Anchoring the breakfast nook with its garden views, a Hickory Chair table and chairs is pretty and practical. “I selected furnishings that were functional and comfortable with traditional silhouettes and luxurious finishes,” says Lauren Stern.

Robert F. Torrone & Mark Woodside, Kitchen

Bright orange accessories energize this sun-filled kitchen that features a handsome brick wall and white-tile backsplash. “We used a vintage finish in keeping with the house’s time period,” says Mark Woodside, who worked with Robert Torrone to design the room’s cabinetry by Wood-Mode.

Limited space posed a challenge for the design duo, prompting the removal of a wall separating the kitchen and pantry to make room for a large island that features natural-quartz counters. “We wanted guests to experience the great functionality you can bring to a room, regardless of its size,” explains Woodside.

    Lauren Guarcello, Guest Room

Blame it on the chinoiserie toile. “The fabric called for a pagoda-style headboard,” insists Lauren Guarcello. “Because the upholstered piece lent itself to a traditional interior, I wanted a few modern elements.” Enter the shell chandelier, bamboo mirrors, Greek key dresser, and faux-zebra rug. Walls wrapped in chocolate brown grass cloth are an ideal backdrop for bold accessories, while the ceiling’s striped paper adds yet another element of surprise.

Russell Minion & Juan Carlos Gutierrez, Master Bedroom

A tour of Gustav III’s Pavilion in Sweden’s Haga Park inspired the room’s peaceful palette and magnificent gold-leaf accents. “We wanted to reflect a soothing yet dramatic livable space,” explains Juan Carlos Gutierrez. “In doing so, the key elements were the canopy bed and floating wall panels with custom wallpaper inset into gold-leaf molding.” Adding to the lavish scene is an assortment of textures, including silk draperies, old-world damask bed linens, a velvet-upholstered Turkish divan, and a Persian rug atop flooring from Shaw Floors.

Donna Martin & Joe Parisi, Powder Room

A hammered-copper sink and a pebble-tile floor team with dog-patterned wallpaper and curtains to create a charming powder room. “It reflects the personality of the country estate and the homeowners’ love of dogs,” says Joe Parisi. Statues and artwork reinforce the room’s tail-wagging theme while orange accents, charcoal trim, and porcelain wall tiles tie it all together.

    Leigh Sorensen, Living Room Terrace

Keeping guests cool and the garden lush were two challenges Leigh Sorensen faced when landscaping the living room terrace. “A southern exposure and the adjacent massive house made the brick terrace a heat sink in need of shade and cool coloring,” says the designer. Her solution: tall palm trees and a patterned umbrella that provide relief from the sun while plants like sedums and agaves flourish. Furniture from Lloyd Flanders has aqua-and-teal striped cushions.
