Red Cross Designers’ Showhouse 2011
Fifteen rooms dazzle with charming and creative solutions
-
There’s no better way to start a new year than with a showhouse filled with ideas that promise to inspire home-improvement plans and lofty design dreams. Now in its 36th year, the American Red Cross Designers’ Showhouse in West Palm Beach, Florida, is first-in-the-nation on the showhouse schedule, and it continues to dazzle with charming rooms and creative solutions. In 2011, 15 rooms of a Mediterranean-style house overlooking Lake Worth were transformed by 18 design visionaries. Statement fabrics in color combinations both creative and classic, theatrical lighting, and window treatments that draw attention to engaging views prove that this showhouse deserves its front-runner status.

Keith Williams, Exterior/Entrance
“We wanted the tall adonidia palms to create a canopy feeling and a balance to the tall structure,” says landscape architect Keith Williams of the showhouse’s exterior.
Pavers for a motor court were obstacles for Williams when designing an elegant entrance to the showhouse. The structure’s architecture was equally challenging, inspiring Mediterranean plantings that created an unexpected garden environment.

Custom planters designed by Williams filled with ficus nitida trees frame the entryway, welcoming guests.

Lisa Erdmann, Family Room
Designer Lisa Erdmann selected a blue-and-white palette for the family room. The color combo appears on the damask drapery panels by Cowtan & Tout. Moroccan urns by Stephen Baker Turner add flair to the family room.
Before laying a finger on the room, Lisa Erdmann noted that the light-flooded interior was a “perfect canvas for pattern and color.” So a chartreuse geometric paper by Quadrille was applied to the wide expanse paneling, offsetting creamy white walls that complement the room’s signature indigo-and-cream.

"I believe the ceiling is the most underdecorated area of most rooms, but it can have such an impact,” says designer Lisa Erdmann. “In this room, we applied moldings to the ceiling and wallpapered with a blue-tinted grass cloth by Thibaut to warm the room and add visual interest to the oftentimes plain ceiling space.”

Mimi Masri, Living Room
Designer Mimi Masri was given the challenge of turning a long and narrow space into a living room. “I wanted a striking room that had appeal and held your attention,” she says.
Masri took advantage of the room facing east, and used a saturated gray for the walls and paired it with chartreuse, which kept the room warm and bright. A soaring window treatment features a Creation Baumann sheer over the glass, with side panels in a yellow-and-white leaf pattern from Schumacher.
Interior design: Mimi Masri, MM Designs, LLC, 3131 Vincent Rd., West Palm Beach, FL 33405; 561/671-1958.

Scott Robertson, Stairwell
“I emphasized the verticality of the space with stripes and full-length draperies,” says Scott Robertson, who designed the showhouse’s stairwell.
Wrapped in wrought-iron railing, the spiraling stairwell unified the adjacent rooms while imparting its own elegance. Stripes of Benjamin Moore’s Acadia White were painted between lengths of Scalamandre wallpaper. Dramatic blue-gray draperies of Schumacher silk drop from the ceiling. A bronze basket of beets in a scale by Luis Montoya and Leslie Ortiz adds a sculptural element to the sweeping space.

Chad Renfro, Study
“The design was a study in contrasts,” says designer Chad Renfro of his study room area. “The goal was to challenge those enjoying the room to discover something new each time and to feel so comfortable they never want to leave.”
A nickel pendant light by Circa illuminates the navy lacquer trim on chalky walls. A mix of patterns and textures includes batik drapery panels by Duralee, natural woven shades by Hunter Douglas, an antique zebra rug, and geometric throw pillows. Sunbrella fabric covers the sofa and chairs.

Joseph Pubillones, Library
“In this room, the librarian has let her hair down and shown that sexy and smart can coexist,” says designer Joseph Pubillones, who designed the library space.
Instead of the predictable rich, deep tones found in many libraries, Pubillones decided to make a book nook that is bright and beachy. Cranberry red accents infuse the room with a punch of color on the desk lamp, the edge of the white linen drapery panel from Holland & Sherry at the window, and on insets that highlight each bookshelf cubby and its contents.

Pubillones stuck to the cranberry theme by including framed prints of Roman busts and vintage club chair by Milo Baughman, both of which sport the color.

A large, eye-catching painting by Veronica Volani-Inza adds spice to the sitting area. Fun floral pillows by Rubelli cover the Duralee-upholstered sofa, encouraging guests to snuggle up with a good read.

Jennifer Garrigues & Diana El-Daher, Landing
Designer Jennifer Garrigues packed an eyeful of artful designs into the landing area. Painted in taupe with a sleek, glossy finish by Benjamin Moore, the walls provide a neutral but sassy foil to casual slipcovered furniture.

Embroidered throw pillows on the chairs and daybed pull together the bright colors used in accessories and artwork. A pair of paintings by Chamblis courtesy of Liman Studio Gallery and floor-scraping draperies by Norbar Fabrics calls attention to the landing’s tall ceilings.

Garrigues mixed modern furniture with unexpected accents like the ceramic urn lamps on top of a drop-leaf table. Black swivel chairs flank the leather cocktail ottoman and linen draperies add ambience to the space.

Stephen Mooney, Master Bedroom
“I like variety,” says designer Stephen Mooney. “When everything is similar in type, you get that one-stop shopping look.”
In the master bedroom, Mooney included a tailored headboard upholstered in a pale green fabric by Cowton & Tout. The bed is flanked by mahogany tables. At the foot of the bed, a bench covered in a trellis-patterned green velvet by Sclamandre adds a formal element.
Interior design: Stephen Mooney, Stephen Mooney Interiors, 6 Via Parigi, Palm Beach. FL 33480; 561/659-1862, stephenmooneyinteriors.com.
-
Mooney had generous proportions to use in creating not only a sleeping area in the master bedroom but a sitting area as well. A tropical pattern from Lee Jofa covers an armchair and provides a sense of movement among the solid-colored furniture. Lucite coffee tables by Michael Taylor are inconspicuously chic.
-
Mooney only needed to add a few elements to the already finished bathroom: wall covering, furniture, rugs and accessories. A soft vine wallpaper by Sherle Wagner added interest to the walls with little effort. The chair by Stephen Mooney Interiors is upholstered in Brunschwig & Fils checkered fabric.
-
Mooney drenched the sunny space with a glowing shade of apricot by Benjamin Moore. The sleek “X” bookcases are a sharp contrast to the comfy couch, sofa, and ottoman in the sitting space.

Joseph Cortes & Kevin Marnell, Guest Room
Designers Joseph Cortes and Kevin Marnell’s guest room included a seaside view overflowing with luscious palm trees. A grass cloth from Phillip Jeffries wraps the walls. At the large expanse of glass, a Roman shade fabricated from a Kravet ikat material and aqua-colored side panels soften the room and act as a contrast to the contemporary furniture.

Judy Howard, Powder Room
“Powder rooms should be alive with color and sass to make up for their tiny dimensions,” says designer Judy Howard.
Pulling from the chic, retro throwbacks that make Tory Burch and Kate Spade such hits on the runway, designer Howard chose a Designers Guild wall covering in 1960s coloration for the small powder room. Modern metal sconces with crystal balls sprouting out of each end flank a Century mirror that reflects the statement flower pattern. A Sherle Wagner pedestal sink formed from sand-colored marble lightens the small space.

Katherine Shenaman, Guest Room
Designer Katherine Shenaman wanted to “create something serene, a soothing oasis away from the ‘hustle and bustle’ of daily life” with her bedroom sweet.
Champagne-colored Lee Jofa wallpaper complimented by butterfly artwork above the bed supplied by Wally Findaly Galleries added a whimsical feel to the space. The dramatic, slate blue bed-frame by Hamilton Furniture was masculine, but maintained the room’s mystical feel. Shenaman then highlighted the guest room’s 12-foot ceiling with a 1950s-style, star-inspired light fixture formed of solid brass and plated in nickel.

Frank Maguire, Lady’s Library
Inspired by the concept of “man cave” translated to the needs of a woman, Frank Maguire designed this lady’s library. “I wanted to take a break from the traditional feminine palette and made a stronger color statement to reflect today's woman,” he says. To achieve this look, Maguire contrasted bright greens and pale yellows with dark-finished wood and bold, brown walls by Benjamin Moore. The result: The perfect lounge area for the woman who needs a workspace in her home.
A vintage, palm tree-patterned fabric and an overdyed Oriental rug added a modern twist to the lady’s library. “Here, the high-functioning woman meets her stylish match,” Maguire says.

Leta Austin Foster & India Foster, Dining Room
With small dimensions, there was no room for Leta Austin Foster and her daughter, India, to overwhelm the dining room with decoration. “Our goal was to keep the space open and light,” says Austin Foster.
The family duo axed window treatments in the dining room space because bushes outside provided ample privacy. A Lucite-and-glass table and 1970s Saporitti chrome chairs covered in striped linen sit atop a giraffe-print rug. The walls tease with a hint of pattern extended by a covering that features overlapping squares of Chinese paper by Gracie.

Michael Powers, Covered Loggia
Greece’s white buildings and blue roofs inspired Michael Powers’ loggia. Powers designed and built the bed, which was covered in striped Ralph Lauren outdoor fabric. Vintage travel pieces, blue Casa Ceramica planters, and hanging black rattan spheres with added lights tie the space’s elements together.

Veronica Volani-Inza, Upstairs Loggia
Interior designer Veronica Volani-Inza wanted to create a romantic, upbeat space that would “encourage guests to relax, have a cup of coffee, and read a book while taking in the intercoastal views.” Sunbrella sheers whisper in a breeze punctuated by bright yellow-and-brown fabric designed by Trina Turk. The statement fabric was used to construct pillows for the love seat and cushions for the lacy gold-painted iron chairs.

Daryl McCann, Pool Terrace
Daryl McCann ensured that the view to the tranquil water was comfortable when designing the pool terrace. “My intent was to break the space by offering multiple places to sit,” says McCann.
Teak outdoor furniture by Idlewild was stained dark while orange-and-aqua-pots and colored pillows pop complementary color into the landscape.
