Oceans 3 Showhouse: Mindful Escape

An oceanfront Hamptons interior by New York designer Eric Cohler

Written by Candace Ord Manroe
  • John Bessler

If designs were people, this oceanfront Hamptons interior by New York designer Eric Cohler wouldn't be just another pretty face. It would be a brainy Belgian beachcombing beauty toting a backpack bursting with books-about as ungeneric as it gets. Created as part of Traditional Home's Oceans 3 Showhouse in Montauk, New York, the villa definitely has its sea legs-sweeping views of the Atlantic ensure that. It's also pretty and polished, wearing cool sand colors, blues, and whites to deflect the summer heat and reference the sea.

But that's where any hint of a beach stereotype ends. A more cerebral thread weaves together a Eurocentric theme, a carefully curated collection of fine art, and a library rather than a media room to give the design more depth than might be expected from a typical American beach house. Accordingly, he seated a new glass-top refectory table featuring four pairs of modernistic tripod legs with a mix of chairs of older styles and varying provenances, including a set of six made in 18th-century Sweden.

"I conceived it as a European take on a beach house," says Cohler, whose protégé on the project was Arlene Angard. "It could be on the coast of France or on the shore in any northern climate. It definitely says beach house but doesn't say which beach. The one thing it absolutely is not is Caribbean," he says. "There is nothing tropical about this design."

In the main living space, Cohler pays homage to the ocean with the window treatments-simple panels fabricated in a watery ikat-style silk fabric from Lee Jofa's "Threads" line-and the wavy pattern on the Tamarian "Diamond Swirl" area rug. "I wanted the design to allude to the environment rather than speak to it directly. I didn't want any seashell designs on fabric or any seaweed pattern on pillows."

The palette reflects the tones of the beach and sea, "but the design stops short of being symbiotic with the natural surroundings," explains Cohler. Instead, the site becomes subordinate to more universal decorating principles that the designer adheres to in all of his projects. "I wanted the spaces to have a global view, not just that of a beach house," he notes.

Decorating with the appropriate furnishings, fabrics, and finishes was only part of Cohler's work. A more critical role, in his interpretation of his job as designer, was to create opportunities for a lifestyle that unfolds gracefully and without effort. Anticipating how each room could be used for enjoyment and relaxation was essential to its success. Including a telescope in the great room as a fixed furnishing, for example, opens up the possibility of stargazing as a nighttime pleasure. Making provisions for a secondary seating area of two chairs facing each other across a small game table set with a checkerboard eliminates excuses for not pursuing this game as a pastime.

Cohler's villa is the largest of the three designed for the Traditional Home showhouse. (New York designers Amanda Nisbet and Philip Gorrivan also designed units.) All three vacation homes are part of Panoramic View, a 50-year-old resort on 10 hilly acres at the tip of Long Island. The resort was just renovated by architect Alexander D. Latham III and builder Oak Gentry for developer Adam Manson of Distinctive Ventures LLC.

In the kitchen, wood cabinets-some with glass inserts-by Plain & Fancy feature Rocky Mountain Hardware. The above-island lighting is from Country Gear. Beneath a rope bar tray, an under-the-counter space provides the ideal spot for the KitchenAid wine cooler.

The idea of a design that goes beyond beach-house typecasting becomes most evident in the bedrooms, which include stately furnishings with a degree of gravitas not typically associated with a summer house.

"I wanted the bedrooms to feel urbane and elegant even though they are in a beach house," explains Cohler. In the master bedroom, that goal translated as a handsome Modern History secretary, an antique French chair, a high tufted American Leather headboard, and a shapely all-upholstered bench with hidden storage that Cohler designed for Lee Jofa.

Wide-stripe walls featuring Ralph Lauren Paint create an appropriately happy backdrop for the green and purple ottomans and fuchsia chair from American Leather. Circa Lighting's "U Fill It" lamp allows personality to have final say. The Greek Key area rug is from Megerian.
