Napa Valley Showhouse 2013

Fine wine supplements delectable design at the Napa Valley Showhouse

Written by Clara Haneberg

What better place to host the second annual Napa Valley Showhouse than the area’s oldest winery? Founded in 1861, the Charles Krug Winery was purchased by the Mondavi family in 1943 and today produces some of the finest Bordeaux-style wines in Northern California. The historic estate, with its newly renovated Redwood Cellar tasting room and hundreds of acres of lush vineyards, served as inspiration for the showhouse’s 13 designers. Proceeds from this 2013 edition benefited the Napa Valley Film Festival, another form of art-making celebrated in Wine Country. So pour yourself a glass and join us for a tour of last year’s charming spaces as we gear up for the showhouse’s third installation later this month.

The 2014 Traditional Home Napa Valley Showhouse is scheduled to open October 12 through November 16 at the Caldwell Vineyard outside Napa.

    Sunroom by Hillary Thomas

The sunroom’s narrow shape made formulating a smart floor plan with properly scaled furnishings a priority. “The armchairs are larger in size, but light and airy due to their woven construction,” designer Hillary Thomas says of the pair’s inclusion. To give the illusion of more space and to maximize natural light, she skipped window dressings. A subtle, fern-patterned wallcovering teams with accents of soft blue and green to achieve a fresh color scheme that isn’t overpowering. A vintage area rug from Morocco is layered atop sisal carpet to complete the collected look.

Living Room by Heidi Bonesteel & Michele Trout

Before styling the window-filled living room, the Bonesteel Trout design team took a trip to Napa to gather ideas. During their travels, Heidi Bonesteel and Michele Trout became infatuated with the area’s earthiness. Organic materials—rope lounge chairs, a shaggy wool rug, and mohair, cotton, and linen pillows—pervade their design.

“The branch drapery rod was a way to marry the interior and exterior spaces,” Bonesteel says. A teal grass-cloth wallcovering highlights the room’s spectacular tray ceiling. Hand-thrown pottery from a local artist ornaments the nesting tables with iron bases.

Family Room by Richard Von Saal

“I wanted guests to see the textures and rich history of our beautiful valley,” says designer Richard Von Saal, who integrated salvaged materials from all across Napa into the family room. Two-hundred-year-old oak slabs were used to create the coffee table and the sectional sofa’s backrest. The floor lamp bases were fabricated from telephone poles planted in the area in 1870. A rattlesnake rug is a nod to the creatures that call California Wine Country’s crevasses home.

    Dining Room by Julia Buckingham

Serving as the room’s centerpiece is the table fashioned from the wood-and-metal gear of an antique water mill wheel. “I added a custom glass top, metal base, and voilà: a true, one-of-a-kind table,” says designer Julia Buckingham. Overhead is a vintage fixture with jewel-toned tea lights discovered during her travels in Paris.

Playful peacock placemats add bright color to the top-of-the-line tableware. To offset the wood-paneled walls, Buckingham introduced upholstered chairs in a perky turquoise print. “I envision a group of old friends eating, laughing, and telling stories over a great glass of vino,” she says.

Christine Teicheira collaborated with Lauren Tapper to design the kitchen and adjacent spaces. The kitchen (featured in our April 2014 issue) is outfitted with state-of-the art Dacor appliances. “Our goal was to harmonize the gray,” Teicheira says of how the appliances’ stainless-steel finish influenced the cooking area’s sultry color scheme. Laundry Room by Christine Teicheira & Lauren Tapper

Since the path from the back door to the kitchen through to the laundry room sees a lot of traffic, the designers wanted the area to evoke a sense of entry. Their solution: wrapping the walls with marble-and-limestone mosaic tiles from AKDO and adding a fully stocked metal bar cabinet from World Market.

Powder Room by Christine Teicheira & Lauren Tapper

An angled countertop aids efficiency and flatters the room’s size. AKDO provided the floor-to-ceiling mosaic tile wall. “Our modern take on the onetime mudroom called for a moody chandelier,” Tapper says. The star pendant with antiqued-mercury glass and the Impressionist artwork both reflect beautifully in the mirror. Sink and faucet from Kallista.

Hallway & Guest Sitting Room by Emily Mughannam

“It’s an elegant escape where the imagination can run free,” designer Emily Mughannam says of the sitting room. Decorative artist Caroline Lizarraga used Benjamin Moore paints to produce the soft blue walls with chinoiserie design. An inviting linen chaise snugs up to windows with gray silk draperies. The stunning glass-orb light fixture is the room’s most contemporary feature.

    Nursery by Lonni Paul

Inspired by the Wine Country’s expansive sapphire sky, Lonni Paul put an emphasis on airy and ethereal pieces when styling the nursery. “The wallcovering’s wing motif recalls birds in nature and those of angels—for the little angel who will rest here,” Paul says. The coordinating crib and dresser with detachable changing station are from Petitnest, the designer’s baby furniture company. An alpaca rug from The Rug Company provides cloud-like comfort for tiny crawlers.
