The Christopher Kennedy Compound Showhouse

The Christopher Kennedy compound salutes the rich design roots of Palm Springs

Written by Clara Haneberg

Lush golf courses and azure water inspired the design—and the color palette—of the Christopher Kennedy Compound, a midcentury sanctuary in Palm Springs included in the 2015 Modernism Week Showhouse calendar. Traditional Home served as national media sponsor for the showhouse in this California community that has been an incubator of world-class architecture and design. With the help of talented designers from across the country and Kennedy himself, the 2,500-square-foot house in Indian Canyon—just a few doors down from one Richard Gere visits in American Gigolo—was transformed into intriguing spaces that show off the latest in decorating trends. Join us as we take a look at the delectable designs desert life offers.

    Pool Terrace by Michael Berman

The pool terrace located in front of the house is a prime place to mingle and enjoy the California sun. Designer Michael Berman selected bright green outdoor furniture from his collection with Brown Jordan to form three seating groups.

Umbrellas provide shade for lounging guests while orange trees, potted plants, and a bust on a pedestal create an appealing mélange at the far end of the pool. A manicured lawn and palm trees form a scenic backdrop.

Pool Bath by Vanessa De Vargas

The powder room off the pool designed by Vanessa De Vargas is glamour personified. A patterned metallic wallcovering by Jeff Andrews pairs well with Robert Abbey’s “Bling” wall sconce dripping in glass orbs from Lamps Plus. Storage boxes and a vintage Asian blanc de chine figure ornament the black Cosentino quartz slab with mounted faucet that backs the minimalist cube sink.

    Living Room by Trip Haenisch

Trip Haenisch was influenced by his surroundings when decorating the long, narrow living room. “Palm Springs is the birthplace of California-cool midcentury design,” he says. “The compound epitomized this and was a great blank space to reinvigorate the designs of the past.” He used a variety of furniture forms, both vintage and new—note the sculptural Hans Wegner chair upholstered in cowhide. Art from the designer’s private collection injects pops of color. The vintage Mongolian goat is a guaranteed conversation starter.

    Dining Room by Nancy Price

A Maison Jansen table that Nancy Price discovered in Buenos Aires served as her jumping-off point when designing the glamorous dining room. “Its frame is strong and sexy, and the glass added a reflective quality the room needed,” she says. Suspended above the table, a midcentury-inspired light fixture with ebony shades casts a soft glow. The charcoal Maya Romanoff wallcovering with a subtle starburst motif injects wood-veneer-like texture. A sculpture encased in a custom Lucite frame crowns the marble console, which features antique torchère legs.

Living and Dining Room Terrace by Gino Castano and David Lasker

South American modernism made its way to the desert thanks to the design team of Gino Castano and David Lasker. The duo ensured there was a hierarchy of scale when piecing together the outdoor terrace. Brazilian architect Oscar Niemeyer inspired them to create the large sculpture defining the exterior space. A pair of geometric chairs made from woven cloth provide surprising comfort, as do loungers with patterned cushions. “Each furniture item was meant to accommodate a variety of experiences, from lounging and dining to playing and hosting parties,” Castano says. The stacked pebble coffee table was a crowd favorite. “People reacted with such glee when they were able to swivel them.”

Den by Lance Jackson and David Ecton

“We wanted the room to have a smoky, sexy vibe that was full of contrasting texture,” says Lance Jackson, who designed the vibrant, art-filled den with David Ecton. Shades of turquoise and chartreuse mingle happily—see the vintage sectional sofa upholstered in ikat velvet, drapery panels, valance, and pillows. White armchairs with cane backs and a chrome faux-bamboo cocktail table float atop the layered sea grass and shaggy fur rugs.

    Kitchen by Christopher Kennedy

Knowing he’d be moving in after the showhouse closed, Christopher Kennedy designed the compact kitchen with himself in mind. A lover of green, he chose a dark grass cloth to offset the avocado cabinetry and floating shelves. Since David Hicks is his design icon, Kennedy selected a Hicks hexagon-pattern wallcovering (“La Fiorentina” from Lee Jofa) in grassy hues to punctuate the far wall. “I joked that I was bringing back the avocado-green kitchen,” he says.

    Master Bedroom by Mark Cutler

Mark Cutler’s goal for the master bedroom was simple: “Create a modern-feeling room using traditional elements and silhouettes.” Stealing the show is the canopy bed with statement-making chartreuse fabric from Robert Allen. “I thought the intensity of the chartreuse would stand up to the vivid green golf course outside,” he explains. A Scandinavian flat-weave rug in a geometric design adds interest below. The mix of furniture styles—note the Indian wood-and-bone inlay bedside table and Danish modern writing desk—gives the intimate space a global aura.

    Master Closet by Christopher Kennedy

To open up the L-shape closet connecting the master bedroom and bath, Christopher Kennedy removed the accordion doors that concealed clothing and installed a closet system from The Container Store. “I embraced the low ceiling by making it a focal point,” Kennedy says. See the smile-inducing butterfly wallcovering overhead. An eye-grabbing chair offers an elegant perch for putting on shoes, while wool carpet provides comfort underfoot.

    Master Bath by Marlaina Teich

Opting for warm and unexpected, Marlaina Teich selected a lacquered strié wallcovering in navy by Phillip Jeffries for the master bath’s vanity walls. “While all-white bathrooms are crisp, they can sometimes be stark,” the designer says. Duravit’s mirror cabinets and wall-mounted sinks save space while evoking modern flair. Marble floors inject timeless elegance. A wall sconce formed from cut glass and a Z-cart with shiny chrome frame corralling towels and toiletries serve as finishing touches.

Guest Bedroom by Michael Ostrow & Roger Stoker

When mixing patterns, “the key is to have one color that ties all the prints together,” Michael Ostrow and Roger Stoker advise. In the guest room, aqua was their common denominator—it coordinates the rug, pillows, and chain-link draperies from Grace Home. A vintage hanging chair keeps with the color scheme and adds a bit of whimsy.

    Guest Bath by Tabitha Evans

“My approach was to keep it simple but make it special,” says designer Tabitha Evans of the tropical guest bath. To make the small space shine, Evans wrapped the walls in a colorful bird wallcovering by Thibaut. “It had the vintage feel I wanted, and those sweet birds added a touch of whimsy,” she explains. All the nickel accessories, including the faucet, are by Dornbracht. A Missoni candle and vibrant hand towels complement the upbeat palette.
