Profile: Adam Calkin
Assistant Design/Market Editor April Hardwick writes:
Designer Adam Calkin loves his vintage motorcycle and tattoos, but it is Gustavian, rococo, and neoclassic design he turns to for inspiration. Born in Sussex, England, Adam has been sketching and painting since he was 15. Never formally trained, he learned from working alongside British decorator Albert Lee and from studying the work of legendary decorator John Fowler.
Adam began as a muralist, painting on paneling in Irish castles and creating Egyptian motifs in casinos in Cairo-sometimes remaining on location up to a year. Now he's creating fabric and wallpaper patterns, and his designs make walls and upholstery come alive with expertly detailed depictions of flora and fauna. His new collection includes "Adam's Eden" (loosely based on a European version of 18th-century chinoiserie) for the British fabric house Lewis & Wood.

A"My papers and fabrics are meant to fit comfortably in an English country house, but in a contemporary as well as a traditional setting," he says. Freelance projects for 2007 include a new line of tiles for U.K.-based Fired Earth (firedearth.com) and designs for Osborne & Little (212/751-3333). For custom projects, contact Adam at Lewis & Wood (lewisandwood.co.uk).
