A modern steel staircase introduces a loft-like feel to the traditionally furnished living room. A large abstract painting by Lamar Briggs hangs on the stair wall, and three modern sculptures by Bruce Gueswel share space with an antique French armoire under the steel staircase. You can see several of the original brick archways; the two leading to the outside are now fitted with French doors.

Reclaimed hickory floors in the old Fort Sheridan storage stable link the dining room with a sitting area in the kitchen. A Jim Thompson Thai silk plaid on the dining chairs repeats colors in the modern art.

The painting is by Kirk Deffebach.

Multiple archways with new French doors open the house to the pergola-shaded gardens.

Ann Sacks tiles set on the diagonal create a stunning backdrop in the kitchen. An antique French butcher-block table and pot rack (an upside-down meat rack) provide interest and function.

White marble countertops are ideal for rolling out pastries. Antique copper items are displayed with a vintage French railroad clock.

A soft palette and Karastan carpet create a serene setting in the master bedroom. A window arch frames an antique French dough box.

Chairs and ottoman are in Grey Watkins fabric from Stark.

Every home has a distinct voice and personality, and a designer needs to listen, says Judith. That personality is determined by the architecture, outdoor surroundings, and, of course, the people who live there. “It’s an entire organic unit,” she says. The flowers in gardens surrounding her Chicago home sparked her interior color palette, while multiple doors helped define furniture placements. Judith has been a designer since 1975, working in Chicago, Atlanta, and Arizona. The couple recently moved permanently to Paradise Valley, Arizona, after building a home there.
