Midcentury design makes a splash at the Christopher Kennedy Compound Modernism Week Showhouse

Written by Clara Haneberg

Showhouses inspire patrons and push designers to test their boundaries. Thus was the case at the Christopher Kennedy Compound, part of the 2016 Modernism Week Showhouse. Eighteen designers and Kennedy himself transformed a gem of a midcentury home nestled in the outskirts of Palm Springs.

Entry by Colin Blanchard & Kenneth McRobbie

The entry by Colin Blanchard and Kenneth McRobbie evokes modern desert living with a worldly aura. “We envisioned home-owners who love art and quality pieces that reflect craftsmanship and enduring beauty,” Blanchard says.

Entry by Colin Blanchard & Kenneth McRobbie

To create a better connection with the courtyard and increase natural light, the duo replaced the original wood doors with glass. A table with a carved-wood base by McGuire breaks up the symmetrical space while stone pedestals topped with antique Asian jars anchor each niche. Portable iron ottomans with leather seats accompany the arrangement. Circa Lighting’s cubist chandelier optimizes negative space overhead.

    Living Room by Michael Berman

A majestic equine diptych greets guests in the living room by Michael Berman. To reflect pretty sunsets, the designer also installed a wall of mirrors. But the addition came with obstacles: “It was impossible to hang anything on them and they reflected everything, so we’d end up with duplicates,” Berman says. To minimize reflections, he created the slender floor lamps with opaque cylindrical shades. Blue velvet and oyster-hued chenille from Kravet cover the swivel chairs and boomerang-shape sectional sofa with plush channeling. Lacquered “Dimple” tables are by Berman for Theodore Alexander.

With its reflective ceiling, large-scale diptych, and stunning Murano glass chandelier, the dining room by Martyn Lawrence Bullard leaves a lasting impression. “It’s high 1960s design with a true Palm Springs moment,” the designer says. Bullard custom-designed the chrome geometric wallcovering. Vintage Paul Evans chairs upholstered in emerald leather surround a white pedestal table. Den by Patrick Dragonette

A vintage Billy Haines sofa that once belonged to former pro football player Gene Howard jump-started the den’s design. “It was in my inventory and I hadn’t restored it, so this was a perfect opportunity to bring it back to life,” says designer Patrick Dragonette. Together with a pair of Grosfeld House acrylic chairs, the retro seating establishes a calming palette, which is emphasized by a natural-fiber wallcovering and patterned area rug. The shapely floor lamp, tiered side table, and stools with statement bases are Dragonette’s designs. The brass cocktail table is on loan from the designer’s own living room.

    Den Bath by Keith Fortner

Keith Fortner took cues from the adjoining den when designing its bath. A gilded-cork wallcovering dresses the walls while Tilebar’s white quartz flooring gleams below. The Silestone vanity countertop is outfitted with Dornbracht faucets. Brass sconces by Corbett Lighting through Ferguson illuminate with elegance. “They were the ‘earrings’ to the entire vanity setup,” Fortner says.

    Laundry Room by Denise McGaha

“I wanted a space that would elicit gasps,” says Denise McGaha of the laundry room design. Abstract art teams with a teal palm-leaf wallcovering to jazz up the walls. “It makes even the most mundane chore a delight,” she says. Nest Studio’s translucent, satin-brass hardware embellishes the built-in cabinets coated in Pratt & Lambert’s high-gloss “Whirlpool Blue” paint. Floating shelves afford extra storage. The stackable washer and dryer are by Bosch through Ferguson. A jute chandelier amplifies the cheerful workspace.

Powder Room by Michel Smith Boyd

Michel Smith Boyd wanted the powder room to be indulgent. “Everyone pays it a visit, so why not make the trip worthwhile?” he says. The moody geode wallcovering elicits a jewel-box feel that’s heightened by framed art and a rose-gold faucet from Dornbracht through Ferguson. A vintage mohair stool keeps to the lavish criteria. Circa Lighting’s bronze sconce brightens the vanity area with a Silestone by Cosentino countertop and gray stained-oak cabinetry.

    Master Bedroom by Julia Buckingham

A faintly patterned wallcovering paves the way for bold bursts of violet, navy, and fuchsia in the master bedroom, designed by Julia Buckingham. Custom art containing crystals and gems crowns the headboard layered with tie-dye pillows. A feminine, floral-motif rug garnishes the quartz flooring. Buckingham upholstered the antique settee in Romo’s spray-dyed viscose velvet. Murano glass lamps with twisted hips flirt with the vintage cowboy art above the console. The brass cactus sculpture is on loan from the designer’s Phoenix home.

    Teen Bedroom by Carson Kressley

Carson Kressley didn’t skimp on bold hues when it came to the sassy teen bedroom. “It’s a riot of color that’s super fun,” says the designer. To achieve an “updated ’70s vibe,” Kressley coated the ceiling in aqua “Caribbean Holiday” paint by Pratt & Lambert and upholstered the back wall in Phillip Jeffries’ orange hemp wallcovering. Sleepover-worthy twin beds with turquoise duvets and hot-pink Regency-style headboards beckon with comfort. A cowhide rug adds warmth to Tilebar’s glossy white flooring. Vintage American Tourister suitcases symbolize the idea of “escaping back to the teenage years.”

Teen Bathroom by Allison Mattison & Liza Sharp

The lively palette continues in the teen bath by Allison Mattison and Liza Sharp of Trellis Home. “We wanted to use bright, vivid colors that feel young, fresh, and evoke Palm Springs style,” Mattison says. The designers’ own chevron zebra-print wallcovering lends soft pattern to the small space, which is echoed by complementary aqua penny tiles. A lime-green quartz countertop brings an unexpected burst of color to the vanity. Matching tassel sconces flank an acrylic mirror with brass detail. Wendy Concannon created the vibrant starfish art. The toilet is DXV by American Standard through Ferguson.

    Guest Bedroom  by Justin Shaulis

The culture and geography of Palm Springs influenced the guest bedroom design by Justin Shaulis. A shagreen wallcovering from Fromental wraps the walls in luxurious texture. Shaulis custom-designed the upholstered bed and the acrylic nightstands edged in brass. Hand-painted bed linens and silk draperies “mimic the sunrise and sunset in the Coachella Valley,” he says, while the graphic art above the bed reminds him “of a calligrapher just beginning to document an idea.” A gold-leaf chandelier and sculptural midcentury table lamps illuminate the sophisticated retreat.

    Tea House by Christopher Kennedy

The teahouse, also designed by Christopher Kennedy, is an ideal spot to rejuvenate and relax. An architectural wood pergola adds an air of intimacy. “It speaks to my love of grids and cubist geometry,” Kennedy says. Glass flooring lets the desert landscape peek through while acknowledging the outdoor room’s cantilevered construction. The Gloster drinks table between the teak lounge chairs also acts as a cooler. A living succulent wall reiterates the organic vibe.
