2016 Napa Valley Showhouse

15 design talents with a taste for refined wine country style transform a vintner’s ranch home for our Napa Valley Showhouse

Written by Clara Haneberg

Resting among prosperous rolling hills, the home of Lisa Peju, a second-generation winemaker with deep California roots, served as the setting for our 2016 Napa Valley Designer Showhouse benefiting the Napa Valley Film Festival. Lisa and her sister, Ariana Peju, of the prestigious Peju Province Winery had just opened Liana -Estates, a modern winery that offers New Age experiences—think yoga classes paired with bubbly.

    Dining room by Marie Flanigan

With the home’s backyard as its backdrop, the light-filled dining room offers a modern-farmhouse vibe geared to entertaining. “It’s a blend that embodies everything that comes to mind when I think of Napa—elegant yet nonfussy, subtle yet texture-rich,” says Marie Flanigan, one of Traditional Home’s 2015 class of New Trad designers. The gathering space’s shiplap paneling is the designer’s favorite. Linen draperies are countered by heavy custom hardware. Woven dining chairs surround a French oak dining table that seats six. A muted rug provides comfort underfoot while an oversize pendant with a box-pleated shade caps the timeless arrangement.

    Powder Room by Kimberley Harrison

A bold floral wallcovering prompted Kimberley Harrison’s powder room design. “I wanted the vanity to be clean and simple so the wallpaper could really pop,” she says. Crossville’s white glass tile adorns the wall while gray-veined quartz from Silestone by Cosentino provides a sleek surface for primping. The wall-mount brushed-nickel faucet and square vessel sink are from DXV by American Standard. Sun streams through the window dressed with Roman shade fabric reminiscent of flower petals. Pratt & Lambert’s “Blue Star” paint on the ceiling draws eyes to the tiered fringe pendants and suspended mirror with elaborate frame. A ceramic-head planter filled with succulents reiterates the organic-modern ambience.

Family Room by Leslie Kalish & Gayle Leksan

“The natural ambience evokes relaxed Napa style,” says Leslie Kalish, who worked with Gayle Leksan to create the layered family room. Pratt & Lambert’s matte charcoal paint envelops the space appointed with organic accents—an albizia console, a petrified-wood accent table, and a coiled liana vine above the fireplace.

Black-and-white textiles, including a wool rug, ethnic-stripe fabric, and floor cushions upholstered in African mud cloths, incorporate further contrast. A leather chair with hemp-tie tufting perches near the hearth with its Belgian bluestone surround. A plush sofa adorned with pillows accommodates overflow. The patterned table lamp and aged-iron hanging pendant are from Circa Lighting.

    Guest Room by Jean Liu

Pratt & Lambert’s “Siam Blue” paint drenches the guest room in bold color. “I felt it was the most efficient path to achieving an equally warm and dramatic atmosphere,” says Jean Liu, who admits to losing sleep over the daring selection. Childhood memories of Napa’s autumnal hues influenced the indigo-and-marigold scheme. Lawrence Lee’s Animal Parade, an allusion to the homeowner’s time as a zookeeper, hangs above the built-in bench with linen cushion. The niche is highlighted by a neutral grass-cloth wallcovering. A log coffee table, Mongolian lamb throw, and twine-ball sculpture amplify the texture.

    Laundry Room by Catherine Davin

Bricks laid in a herringbone pattern on the backsplash lend unexpected warmth to the laundry room by Catherine Davin. “You actually want to be in here—rather than running in and out just to accomplish chores,” Davin says of the work space. Maple cabinets with gunmetal pulls by Columbia Cabinets are accented with wood-look “Makai” countertops from Dekton by Cosentino. A gilded sconce and a damask Roman shade add elegance to the room. The bronze faucet and white apron sink are from DXV by American Standard. A seagrass runner tops the “Castellon” floors by LM Flooring.

    Guest Bath by Robin Heard

The guest bath by Robin Heard embraces the homeowner’s Italian-Dutch heritage. As Heard describes it, an old-world meets country-chic feel infuses the intimate space, which also acts as the pool bath—note the French door with direct outdoor access. Handmade wallpaper with gold brushstrokes injects subtle sparkle. A weathered-oak vanity with open shelving is outfitted with DXV by American Standard’s undercounter sink and platinum-nickel faucet. A decorative medicine cabinet in a coordinating finish keeps clutter hidden. Honed mosaic-marble flooring extends inside the glass-enclosed shower.

Main-level Master bedroom by Casey Howard

A pair of designer Casey Howard’s heels stimulated the main-level master bedroom design. Fashionable details, including suede, gold zippers, and leather-cord piping, add flair to pillows and ruched valances. Magenta and deep purple accents mimic the “iconic color of the valley’s lush grapes,” Howard says. Circa Lighting’s alabaster table lamps with linen shades top the tiered bedside tables. Gray sisal wraps the walls in subtle texture while a patterned Tibetan wool rug garnishes the oak floor by LM Flooring. “Unique inspiration and natural luxe elements result in an updated take on Napa’s traditional rustic aesthetic,” Howard says.

Inspired by the “richness and warmth after harvest,” the upstairs landing by Beth Dotolo and Carolina V Gentry emulates an aerial view of vineyards. A geometric area rug grounds the room while chairs from Century flank a narrow console. Large-scale artwork brings fluidity to the angular space. She selected an embroidered cherry blossom fabric for the draperies and bed accent pillows. A striking indigo wallcovering—with its watery effect—outfits the walls. The four-poster, black bedside tables, white lacquer side table, and occasional chairs with marbled upholstery are all from the designer’s collection for Hickory Chair—also available through The Mine. An antique rug, cable-knit throw, and blooming flower arrangements impart extra dimension to the space.

An ideal spot to rest and unwind, the soaking tub with a brushed-nickel faucet from DXV by American Standard entices. Ombré draperies in deep blue hues provide privacy while an antique rug with quiet coloration accents the porcelain tile flooring by Crossville. The shower walls from Dekton by Cosentino depict the rich gray veining of Calacatta slabs. Overhead, light pink paint coats the ceiling while Circa Lighting’s polished-nickel pendant with white glass inserts glistens.
