NYC’s annual Holiday House enchants with imaginative interiors

Written by Clara Haneberg

Special occasions conjure innovative ideas at New York City’s Holiday House Designer Showcase, where themes range from birthdays to the summer solstice. The much-anticipated annual event benefits the Breast Cancer Research Foundation and excites attendees with celebratory interiors that demand a double take.

St. Andrew’s Day by James Rixner

To honor St. Andrew’s Day—celebrated November 30 for the patron saint of Scotland and a host of other countries—James Rixner sprinkled the salon in Scottish textiles. “The room highlights traditional Scottish design elements, such as luxurious cashmere fabrics, tartan plaids, and iconic Harris Tweeds, showcasing them in a unique way,” he says. The focal-point fireplace is topped with vintage Murano vases and a sunburst mirror from Christopher Guy. CR Laine high-back chairs and a sectional sofa sporting gray wool from Johnstons of Elgin provide seating. The red plaid pillows are from Holland & Sherry; custom dark velvet pillows are from Frette. Michael Aram created the fireplace screen and the gold-plated bowl on the coffee table. Glass decanters are by Glencairn Crystal.

    Snow Day by Björn Björnsson

Blessed with great bones, the Snow Day room by Björn Björnsson is expansive but cozy. “The ceiling immediately made me feel like I was in a snow globe,” says Björnsson, who called on his childhood in Iceland to create the winter wonderland. To brighten the space, the designer used white furnishings, mirrors, and strategically placed LED light strips. Topiary-topped vessels draw attention to the arched windows. Baccarat’s crystal vase and a ceramic apple from JANUS et Cie accessorize the coffee table. Blue artwork and polar bear figurines reiterate the chilly aura.

    Boxing Day by Robert Passal

Beneath the carved, garland-framed mantel, a firebox overflows with gilt-wrapped gifts traditionally given in some countries the day after Christmas. Bespoke twill was paper-backed to cover the ceiling. Stark’s oriental rug delineates a cozy conversation area with a sofa garnished with a gray cable-knit throw and a lounge chair upholstered in a Ronda Carman russet plaid. Contemporary art and a custom ceiling fixture keep the classic space current.

    Mother's Day by Antonino Buzzetta

Antonino Buzzetta didn’t hesitate when it came to incorporating geometric prints and graphic art into his Mother’s Day sitting room. “The room’s purpose is to embody the vivacity of the woman who would rule over it,” he says, noting the bold ceiling painted in black and white from Farrow & Ball. Dynamic pattern also appears in silk-wool rugs, rose-motif draperies, and vinyl floor tiles. Cool gray walls provide a backdrop for colorful art, while hand-forged iron chandeliers “add a bit of Sputnik.”

    Winter Solstice by Campion Platt

The Turkish winter solstice, called Nardoqan, stimulated Campion Platt’s renewal-inspired room, which he envisioned as a psychologist’s office. It conveys the “transformation of darkness to light, both literally—the longest day—and figuratively,” Platt says. “Black Blue” paint coats the ceiling and trim while Turkish rugs add warmth underfoot. Psychology Today magazines and academic books on built-in bookshelves—plus a simple daybed and armless sofa—reflect the theme. Behind the hide-upholstered lounge chairs, starburst art reiterates “triumph over darkness in an explosion of gold,” he says.

    Happy Birthday by Lonni Paul

Lonni Paul teamed with Crypton Home Fabric to create the first-ever kid’s room at Holiday House. Designing with her 9-year-old daughter, Sophie, in mind, the designer transformed the space into a princess-themed, gray-and-lavender birthday playroom. “The key was to make it child-friendly while keeping it refined,” Paul says. “Stains and spills will literally roll off the sofa upholstered in Crypton.” The Roman window shade is by The Shade Store; the furry stool is from Wesley Hall. A floral wallcovering and Lladró’s cascading butterfly-fairy chandelier lure eyes to the dome ceiling.

    Summer Solstice by Drew McGukin

Drew McGukin showcases Robert Allen’s Landscape Color collection in the Summer Solstice den. “When I saw the neutrals and fresh textures, I immediately thought casual, beach, comfort,” he says. A large sofa, a drapery wall, and matching fabric walls give the illusion of a larger space. “His” and “her” armchairs let guests be picky when it comes to comfort. McGukin designed the mirror-meets-shelf configuration. Metallic touches, including a vintage ceiling pendant, disc wall art, and a brass table lamp from Circa Lighting in a wall niche, lend polished appeal.

Home for the Holidays by Paris Forino

The master bedroom “reflects worldly sensibilities and inimitable style,” says its designer, Paris Forino. The molding-clad space perfectly blends pedigreed antiques with contemporary designs. Drapery fabric from Jim Thompson dresses the windows, while a pistachio mohair rug from South Africa adorns the floor. Frette linens and macaroon hues add feminine flair to the camel bed with black trim, inspired by a pair of Chanel flats. A New York artist created the unique mirror that hangs above the bedside chest.

    Arbor Day by Stacy Garcia

Acknowledging Arbor Day, the second-story hallway by Stacy Garcia is awash in color. “I wanted to transform a space that is typically an afterthought,” she explains. The corridor dons a refreshing blue-and-green palette punctuated by custom herringbone wood floors and a floral wallcovering from her collection for York Wallcoverings. A neon “flower shop” sign entices guests to explore the “sensory meditation space” beyond.

    "Holi Fest" by Julia Buckingham

“It was crazy-shaped and fun to work with,” says Julia Buckingham, who transformed an octagon room into a vibrant sitting area inspired by India and Nepal’s Holi Festival of Colors. The pie-shaped ottomans and “Wiggle” chairs upholstered in S. Harris fabric from Fabricut are part of Buckingham’s collection for Global Views. Circular striped art crowns a mantel topped with an orchid-and-calla-lily arrangement. The rose quartz tie-dye wallcovering is the designer’s favorite. Instead of a ceiling and trim in typical white, she opted for a soft pink “Calluna” paint. Louise Gaskill’s chandelier with emerald glass completes the energetic assembly.

    Glamping by Vicente Wolf

Trees, grass, and a lambskin throw amplify the back-to-nature premise. Carved masks and Indonesian chairs are from Wolf’s own collection. An audio track of chirping birds via a Savant sound system tops off the sensory experience.
