It's no secret that the colors you choose can drastically change the appearance of a room, yet the large swaths of bold color on the rooms that follow might surprise you. Take a look and see just how practical and welcoming these dramatic choices can be.

Never one to shy away from vibrant color, designer Summer Thornton lacquered this study's walls and tray molding in cobalt blue. The combination of fearless color and pattern is inviting and energizing.

    Orange Dream

"Young" and "fresh" were the driving directives behind an update of this pre-war apartment. In the sitting room, that meant bathing the walls in a tangerine glaze. Designer Lee Cavanaugh then used an over-wash with a hint of gold for a touch of shimmer. Ceamy zebra print upholstery helps infuse a sense of calm.

    Perfectly Pink

Pale pink grabs the spotlight in this incredible dressing room, giving the space an extra girly edge. “In my mind, these are rooms where it’s OK to step outside of the box colorwise,” says designer Andrew Howard.

    Seeing Green

While green is an accent in the nearby kitchen, it takes center stage in this butler's pantry. The verdant hue dresses the walls, ceiling, and even the mullions for dramatic effect. A colorful Roman shade and white marble countertops help tame the bold color.

    Punctuated with Pink

    Showhouse Chinoiserie

“We wanted the space to be fresh and young, and not look like an old plantation house,” says Lance Jackson of the showhouse library he designed with David Ecton. Fromental's vibrant chinoiserie jump-started the color choices. A grass-green ceiling, blue velvet armchairs, and bright throw pillows drench the space in saturated color.

    True Blue

In a daring display of color, the cabinets and even the millwork in this family kitchen were painted a rich navy blue. “It would’ve been very difficult to keep this huge space from feeling sterile if we’d painted the millwork white,” says designer Shazalynn Cavin-Winfrey.

    Creative Color

One part practical and one part playful, liberal use of a striped chartreuse fabric sets a jovial mood in this guest retreat. To deal with a plague of unattractive nooks for utilities on the top floor of this New York home, architect Doug Larson created this tented space to hide the compartments and at the same time provide a cocoon-like hideaway for visitors.
