Spongeware pitchers that once belonged to late curator David Whitney, a champion of artists such as Andy Warhol before he became a lodestar. The Rorschach-like patterns (“no two are the same,” says Leigh) make spongeware worth collecting. The Whitney-pedigree pitchers above sold for a potent $3,000, but most 19th-century pitchers are fairly affordable–less than $200 at flea markets.
