In our November 2006 Body and Soul column, we featured the chicken-coop-turned-artist's-studio of Martha's Vineyard resident Laurie Krasny Brown. Laurie is something of a transformation expert, as she herself has evolved from writing children's books to fulfilling her dream of creating visual art. Today she is a successful and wonderfully talented artist who has exhibited her work in Boston and, soon, in Manhattan.
Nineteenth-century American antiques set a tone of practical grace in Laurie's studio. "This is an art studio and I want to be comfortable using things," she says. We asked Laurie about her favorite hunting grounds for American antiques. Here are a few.
Antiques at the Armory - New York City
This show takes place alongside the January Winter Antiques Show. "If you know what you like, you could go in there in a day and furnish your whole house," says Laurie. Located at Lexington at 26th Street; 212/255-0020 or stellashows.com.
Steven Score - Boston
Laurie has shown work at this gallery/antiques business. "He has a great eye," she says. "His things are so flavorful." Located at 73 Chestnut Street; 617/227-9192 or vermontada.com/score.
Willis Henry Annual Shaker Auction - Marshfield, Massachusetts
This summer auction is a favorite. "Their pieces are first- class," she says. Located at 22 Main Street; 781/834-7774 or willishenry.com.
Marna Anderson - Kingston, New York
Laurie's five-tiered black iron serving tree surfaced here. "She has a profound sense of form and is very selective," says Laurie. Located at 179 Binnewater Road; 845/331-0508 or marnaanderson.com.
Winston's Flower Shop - Hingham, Massachusetts
The massive cupboard in Laurie's studio is typical of the striking pieces for sale in this flower shop. Located at 8 Main Street; 800/457-4901 or winstonflowers.com.
